Job descriptionWe have exciting opportunities for highly motivated doctors to join us at Bronglais General Hospital in Aberystwyth. Applications are invited from suitably experienced physicians with relevant general medical expertise and subspecialty interest who have or are eligible for their CCT. These are new, innovative posts working along side our existing consultant colleagues to support and develop general physicians with a specialist interest.
All subspecialty interests will be considered and developed as part of these exciting roles where clinical leadership is essential.
Bronglais General Hospital is a 165 bed acute hospital that serves a core population of 125,000 in a geographically large and rural area. The summertime population approximately doubles due to the influx of holidaymakers and there are also a large number of university students based in Aberystwyth. Furthermore, approximately 70,000 permanent residents live in areas equidistant from Bronglais and other acute care sites, in areas to which enhanced outreach is planned as part of future development of services.
Bronglais General Hospital provides a broad range of services in General Medicine, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Trauma and Orthopaedics. The Anaesthetic and Critical Care team interface with all specialties and provide a state of the art, consultant delivered ITU service.
As a consultant in a rural district general hospital, the post holder will have the chance to practice a wide range of different aspects of medicine, care for a culturally and sociologically diverse range of patients and develop strong relationships with other healthcare professionals in your team and across the community. There are also opportunities to develop skills in communicating with tertiary centres from a distance and explore the use of telemedicine and to work closely with the Centre for Excellence in Rural Health at Aberystwyth University and Rural Health and Care Wales (RHCW) in developing a clinical model that provides high quality healthcare for the people of Mid Wales.

Hywel Dda Health Board was formed on 1st October 2009 and replaces Hywel Dda NHS Trust, Pembrokeshire Local Health Board, Ceredigion Local Health Board and Carmarthenshire Local Health Board. Providing primary, secondary, community and mental health and learning disability healthcare to a population of 372,320 people across mid and south west Wales in the counties of Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire. This includes the management of four acute hospitals, Withybush General Hospital, West Wales General Hospital, Bronglais General Hospital and Prince Philip Hospital.
Carmarthenshire is in the centre of an area of outstanding natural beauty. In close proximity to the Gower Peninsular, Pembrokeshire Coast, Preseli Mountains and Brecon Beacons, the area affords excellent opportunities for recreational and sporting activities. The city of Swansea, with its theatres, cinemas and shopping facilities is close at hand whilst Cardiff, the capital city of Wales is less than 1 hour away. The M4 motorway and intercity rail network provides easy access to all major UK centres.
