Job description

Two Consultants in General Surgery with special interest in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery

We are looking for two motivated Consultant Colorectal Surgeons based at Bronglais General Hospital, Aberystwyth to join a colorectal team of 4 Laparoscopic Colorectal Consultant Surgeons based at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen and 3 Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeons based at Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest. The appointee will work closely with the existing Colorectal Consultants to provide comprehensive colorectal service to the population of Hywel Dda. Working at other sites will be expected to facilitate effective team working, development and dissemination of specialist skills across the sites.

As well as providing specialist colorectal services the post holder will help develop a networked general and emergency surgical model between Bronglais, Glangwili General and Withybush Hospital. You will be based at Bronglais and you will be required to participate in a 1:4 on call rota as well as providing elective General Surgical Services. All elective commitments will be cancelled during the on call week. Training in the management of all aspects of emergency general surgery is essential. The successful applicant will hopefully have had training in pelvic floor surgery and advanced laparoscopic techniques.

A commitment to audit and clinical governance and risk management is mandatory. It is also expected that the post holder will actively participate in leading training and assessment of juniors. Contribution to teaching is essential as there is a planned major expansion in undergraduate medical student teaching. There is a closer relationship between the Health board and Aberystwyth University and there is opportunity for collaboration between the academics in the university who are interested in health and their colleagues in Bronglais General Hospital.

Furthermore, approximately 70,000 permanent residents live in areas equidistant from Bronglais and other acute care sites, in areas to which enhanced outreach is planned as part of future development of services.

Working in Bronglais provides a mixture of business and pleasure. Bronglais hospital is within walking distance to the town centre, train station, coastline, National Library of Wales and Aberystwyth University with its excellent art centre, cinema, sport centre and climbing wall. There is good access to water sports and cheap membership to golf courses. The area is known for its low crime rate, high quality of life and good primary and secondary schools with excellent after schools activities.
