Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Physician – Otolaryngology performs clinical care, education and research for the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology and the Department of Surgery. The Physician is expected to perform at a high level to provide excellent care for patients and families. The incumbent demonstrates leadership for the other members of the Otolaryngology team. The Physician – Otolaryngology is responsible for Care for patients in the outpatient setting, inpatient consultations, emergency call coverage, surgical care and surgical teaching, teaching of residents, fellows and other members of the staff, participation in otolaryngology meetings and patient rounds, and participation in individual or team research projects. The Physician – Otolaryngology may be required to develop a multidisciplinary clinic.

 

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Works on: Upper airway pathology, congenital and acquired head and neck pathologies, Rhinology,Otological and hearing related pathologies, experience in surgically implantable hearing devices as well as the usual secondary type pathologies related to pediatric otolaryngology practice.
  • Responsible for ensuring a high standard of service is continually provided to all patients, their families and other hospital staff as prescribed in the patient care and facility standards set down by Sidra Medicine.
  • Works as a full-time appointment to Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar and collaborates with the Medical School, to provide teaching support for instruction regarding the otolaryngology curriculum (both general and pediatric specific) by the members of the division for the undergraduate medical students and surgical residents as required for an ACGME curriculum.
  • In conjunction with the Division Chief, Identifies and articulates the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology Surgery providing excellent patient clinical and surgical care
  • Provides excellent patient clinical and surgical care
  • Covers emergency and call duties as determined by the Division Chief
  • Participates in clinical care at offsite locations such as the Hamad General Hospital as required 
  • Works collaboratively with Weill Cornell Medical College – Qatar to provide teaching support for instruction regarding the Otolaryngology curriculum (both general and pediatric specific) by the members of the division for the undergraduate medical students and surgical residents as required for an ACGMEI curriculum
  • Works in a congenial, supportive, collaborative and equitable environment.
  • Works collaboratively with other physicians and all other division staff to ensure that cohesive, cross functional teams are maintained.
  • Promotes mentorship and academic career development for junior team members.
  • Participates in clinical research projects
  • Actively participates in graduate medical education and in education for nursing, technical staff, and other physicians as necessary
    Communicates effectively, consistently, and in a timely manner with colleagues and other staff members
  • Keeps excellent and complete electronic medical records.
  • Participates actively in departmental meetings, retreats, journal clubs, and other agendas
  • Performs departmental duties as requested by the Division Chief

Scope of clinical responsibilities

  • Provides pediatric otolaryngology care for the patients in the Sidra-Hamad Joint Pediatric Program. This includes clinic and outpatient consultations, operative procedures for routine, urgent and emergent care.
  • Develops and runs multi-disciplinary teams required for optimal care of the otolaryngology Surgery patient population.
  • Provides clinical services as required to maintain, as much as possible, continuous coverage for the population. This may include rotations at partner institutions such as Hamad Medical Center; it will require participation in on call roster. All scheduling for on call is done by the Division, under the overall direction of the Chief of Surgery.
  • Participates in medical research/ academic projects for the Division of otolaryngology. This includes the participation in joint programs, collaborations and primary projects of the Division, under the overall direction of the Chief of Surgery.
  • Is accessible and available to referring physicians and allied health care providers.
  • Works cooperatively with other members of department to ensure that high standard of patient care services is maintained.
  • Facilitates patient access to medical care by recommending appropriate referrals to other health care providers in accordance with policies and regulations of the facility.
  • Undertakes appraisals of staff as directed.
  • Participates in mandatory training and actively practices continual professional development in alignment with Sidra’s professional development programs to ensure maintenance of professional licensure/ accreditation
  • Develops and/or delivers training programs to new employees on equipment and procedures in the area of operations in alignment with the department’s and Sidra’s training objectives and plans
  • Acts as an educational resource for the division and contributes to the education of patients, staff and physicians and other stakeholders as required and as requested by the Division Chief
  • Provides support and relief for other surgeons as required
  • Participates in community outreach programs and initiatives undertaken by Sidra
  • Observes departmental and applicable organizational policies, procedures, regulations and information to the Department of Surgery care team
    Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, and maintains patient confidentiality at all times
  • Adheres to the medical staff bylaws.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree (E.g. MD, MBBS, MBBCH) 
  • Completion of residency program with specialty experience or training in Specialty Area from an accredited Western Board
  • Sub specially Fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology (or equivalent training or certification).

Experience:

  • 2+ years of post-certification/residency in Otolaryngology in the relevant field from a North American Academic/ Health care Institution or equivalent in UK, Republic of Ireland, or other European Countries with accredited and recognized board, Australia or New Zealand.

Certification:

  • Valid professional License in the country of origin or country of practice in the specialty area
  • Board Certification or its equivalent in Otolaryngology from an accredited Western Board
  • Eligible for licensure as a Otolaryngologist – Head and Neck Surgeon in the State of Qatar
