Fixed-term contract: 12 months

We are seeking recruit a full-time Locum Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia to be based at The Rotherham Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The post-holders will work alongside the existing team of 25 Consultants, 11 other Specialty Doctors as well as 12 doctors in training from Health Education England (HEE). Colleagues in the department hold significant managerial roles throughout the trust such as the Associate Medical Director: Post-graduate medical education and the Responsible Officer.

The Anaesthetic and Critical Care Department serves a modern and recently expanded theatre and day surgery complex with adjacent ITU and HDU facilities. The Department has an excellent reputation and enthusiasm for Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching and would support applicants if there was a specific teaching interest.

Surgical Specialties in the Trust include: General Surgery (including Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery), Orthopaedics and Trauma, Gynaecology, Urology, ENT, Maxillofacial, Breast Surgery, Ophthalmology and Obstetrics.

The Critical Care Unit consists of 5 Funded ITU beds and 8 funded HDU beds. There are currently 8 Consultants with a special interest in Critical Care Medicine. We have also appointed an Associate Specialist in Intensive care to support the expanding department.

There are many research opportunities within the Critical Care Unit and the trust as a whole. Successful applicants will be encouraged to have an active part in furthering projects and Quality Improvements within the department.

There is close working with the other units in the region and the unit has been contributing to the national audit for the last 15 years.

The post will be integral to maintaining the quality and extent of the service provided by the Critical Care unit and the Anaesthetic Department as a whole.

Any Consultant who is unable to work full-time may be eligible for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on an individual basis with the Chief Executive, Medical Director and Clinical Lead.

The job plan may be modified in discussion with the Clinical Lead and Consultant colleagues.

The Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department deals with around 75,000 patients per year and there are approximately 55,000 inpatients and 250,000 outpatient attendances each year.
