At AmongDoctors EventsUniversity Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

Job description

CONSULTANT RHEUMATOLOGISTS X 2 POSITIONS

We are actively seeking 2 consultant rheumatologists to join a dynamic team in a rapidly developing rheumatology department which is part of expanding university teaching hospital in Britain’s Ocean City. This is an opportunity to live and work in one of the most attractive parts of England, with easy access to both coasts of Devon and Cornwall with beautiful beaches, close proximity to Dartmoor National Park, the Tamar Valley and South Hams. Good transport links exist to London and the rest of the country with an international airport situated close by in Exeter serving most of Europe. There are excellent local schools.

Post 1 is a replacement post concentrating on maintaining and developing the adolescent/transitional rheumatology service that has evolved over the last 10-15 years. The successful applicant will work closely with the paediatric department in driving this forward, as well as contributing to general/adult rheumatology services.

Post 2 is a replacement post. We are seeking to expand our osteoporosis service. The appointee will work with existing consultant staff in rheumatology and orthogeriatrics to expand the service with aim to develop a fracture liaison service, as well as supporting general/adult rheumatology services.

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPT) is closely associated with Plymouth University Peninsula School of Medicine and Dentistry. The successful candidates will be based in the Department of Rheumatology. There are the numerous teaching and growing research opportunities available through PUPMED and the clinical trials unit.

The successful candidates will be employed by UHPT and will complement our team of 4 rheumatology consultants.

Rheumatology services are based at Derriford Hospital. The hospital serves all medical and surgical sub-specialities, is the regional trauma centre and supplies tertiary referral services including cardiology, cardiac surgery, nephrology, neurosciences and oncology.

In January 2018 we opened a dedicated rheumatology outpatient facility within the orthopaedic and rheumatology outpatient department and regular peripheral clinics covering North and East Cornwall and South and West Devon.

The outpatient unit includes a dedicated radiology department, ultrasound room, modern clinic rooms and bespoke 4 bay infusion unit, exclusively for rheumatology. The same day ultrasound service is staffed by 4 consultant musculoskeletal radiologists and 2 musculoskeletal sonographers.

The hospital has a modern hydrotherapy pool and physiotherapy department, with specialist Rheumatology physiotherapists. There is a large occupational therapy department based within the hospital and 1.5 specialist occupational therapists are seconded to the Rheumatology department. A lumbar spine referral pathway is staffed by 2 extended role specialist physiotherapists.
