Job description

We are looking for a motivated Consultant , to support the reconfiguration of the child health service in west Wales, and developing the new model of acute and ambulatory care; you will join colleagues in a dynamic and forward looking General Paediatrics department. All special interests will be considered. 

The paediatric service has merged across the units in the 3 counties that lie within the health board. This is an exciting time to join the team, as we consolidate modern paediatric practice and move on to develop our specialist and community nursing and allied health professionals’ team. This post is primarily based in Pembrokeshire but will include on call commitment in Carmarthenshire. Office accommodation, secretarial support and full IT facilities including access to intranet and internet will be provided.

Hywel Dda University Health Board is an integrated health body, ensuring the delivery of high quality primary, community, mental health and secondary care services. It is responsible for the health and wellbeing of people across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. It also provides a range of services for people living in south Gwynedd and Powys. Integrated health boards are a key first step in creating a world class NHS in Wales, and is one of seven acute Health Boards in Wales serving a population of 384,000 with over 9,500 staff.

Primary care and community services are delivered through: 55 GP practices, 51 Dental practices, 100 Community pharmacies, 52 Optometry premises, 8 Community hospitals, 11 Health centres. Our in-hospital services are currently delivered through:4 Hospitals (Bronglais, Glangwili, Prince Philip, Withybush

The Health Board is fully committed to supporting employees to achieve an appropriate work life balance. We are continually developing ways in which to support greater flexibility. Job sharing and part-time working is already widespread throughout the organisation. Training and education are central to the function of the Health Board, forming a core element of the Clinical Governance Strategy. Hywel Dda is the prescribed connection for approximately 800 Doctors, with a dedicated Medical Appraisal and Revalidation Lead and Manager, who manages and co-ordinates appraisal and revalidation processes across all sites. 

There is also a team of 52 trained appraisers to undertake appraisal meetings. Appraisal workshops and training sessions are provided regularly across the Health Board. 

This post comes during a period of Health Board-wide service reviews, including a comprehensive reconfiguration of services for General Paediatrics in West Wales. The aim is to provide a spectrum of flexible and responsive services for General Paediatrics across the Health Board, encompassing: Acute inpatient assessment and treatment, including HDU
Effective leadership to multidisciplinary staff members of the unit
Development of teaching, training and research within the Organisation, including a variety of trainees.

The Health Board is dedicating to continuing education and the Postgraduate Department has a fully developed programme of guest lectures, lunchtime and afternoon meetings, including special interest groups and co-ordinated intra-practice activities and career counselling, together with weekly departmental meeting.

Hywel Dda Health Board was formed on 1st October 2009 and replaces Hywel Dda NHS Trust, Pembrokeshire Local Health Board, Ceredigion Local Health Board and Carmarthenshire Local Health Board. Providing primary, secondary, community and mental health and learning disability healthcare to a population of 372,320 people across mid and south west Wales in the counties of Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire. This includes the management of four acute hospitals, Withybush General Hospital, West Wales General Hospital, Bronglais General Hospital and Prince Philip Hospital.

Carmarthenshire is in the centre of an area of outstanding natural beauty. In close proximity to the Gower Peninsular, Pembrokeshire Coast, Preseli Mountains and Brecon Beacons, the area affords excellent opportunities for recreational and sporting activities.
