Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine

At AmongDoctors EventsDerby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Job description

Working within the newly formed University Hospitals of Burton and Derby NHS Foundation Trust, this post is based at Queen’s Hospital, Burton and provides a great opportunity to join our ambitious and forward thinking acute medicine team.

We are currently undergoing an acute care transformational change supported by our CEO and Executive Medical Director. These are exciting times - we are working hard to improve medical flow and emergency care for our patients and are proud to be one of the best performing trusts in the Midlands and in the upper third nationally.

Crucial elements of our programme are to:

  • establish a modern, forward-thinking Acute Medical Unit (AMU)
  • invest 750k of new capital money into an integrated front door model and develop a modern, front-door based frailty service
  • invest in and develop our 28 space AMU, establish at least 5 monitored, ring-fenced AMU triage trolleys and develop our 30-bedded short stay ward
  • modernise and develop AMU staffing by introducing non-medical roles (ACPs) and our new Ambulatory Care (AEC, 9 rooms) in line with national guidance
  • use novel approaches to staffing to attract and retain the best doctors to work in AMU and other areas (such as annualised job plans, 4 day week, internal rotations with ED, Medicine and Critical Care)

THE ROLE

We need enthusiastic, motivated and innovative Clinicians to join us in the next stage of our vision. As a place to work, the trust could not be better placed.

We offer the best of the Staffordshire and Derbyshire regions when it comes to relocation opportunities and work/life balance. We border the National Forest and are within easy travelling distance of the Peak District, as well as major cities like Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham for those who prefer city life. We are surrounded by lots of attractive village communities and excellent schools for those looking to settle with a family and can offer a generous relocation package for those that are new to this area.

We’re happy to support your career. With our University hospital status and strong links with research and medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, there are plenty of opportunities for you to become involved with. We work in partnership with Leicester Medical School, Health Education - West and East Midlands and Health Education England to provide high quality education and training.

As a trust, we’re keen to consider requests for flexible working, medical leadership development, mentoring etc and are happy to talk to you about your career and future plans. We can provide advice on housing, schooling and social life in our region. We love it here and are happy to share our knowledge with you. We are also happy to facilitate informal phone calls and visits with some of our senior leaders so you can come and see for yourself.

THE JOB PLAN

We believe Acute Medicine to be rewarding work that requires a balanced job plan. We can offer a basic job plan of 10 PAs, and will also consider requests for up to 12 PAs or less than full time. Your job plan can be tailored to suit a specialty interest with up to 2 PAs encouraged and supported.

Weekend cover is required for the short stay ward on a 1:6 basis (4 hours). There is no general medical on-call commitment after 19:00 mid week or at the weekends.

Our ultimate aim is to have a diverse and dynamic Consultant team to achieve excellent and comprehensive patient care.
